Because Jerry Jones speaks to the media after almost every Dallas Cowboys game, one might think that the ritual has become a bit mundane or even stale. One might think that, but one would be grossly incorrect.
In 2024, perhaps more than any other season in recent memory, Jones has made his post-game press conferences rather newsworthy by saying things that simply fly in the face of reason and good-faith explanations.
For most NFL teams, a player telling a reporter to "talk about deez nuts," as cornerback Trevon Diggs did recently, would be the oddest, most attention-grabbing off-field event of the season. But for the Cowboys, it barely cracks the top five. For Jones, this season’s wilder-than-ever comments are defining 2024. Here’s a rundown of the craziest things he’s said so far.
5. An Inordinate Amount of Cussing
Just before the season began, longtime Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins published an interview with Jones for ALLDLLS sports, where Jones was brash, defiant, and laden with profanity. His confidence in his GM abilities was particularly colorful:
"I’ve done it all. So I have an ordinate amount of confidence that, if anybody can figure out how to get this done, I can," he declared. "I’ve been there every which way from Sunday, and have I busted my ass a bunch? A bunch. And there’s nobody living that’s out cutting and shooting that can’t give you a bunch of times they busted their ass."
Unsurprisingly, it was this self-defense laced with expletives that left the strongest impression. Jones added, "Plus, I’m where the buck stops. When it messes up, I got to cover it. There’s nobody who can do it better."
4. Running from the Truth
Following a loss to the Ravens, where running back Derrick Henry dominated the Cowboys' defense, Jones dismissed questions about why the Cowboys didn’t pursue Henry in free agency.
"We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry," Jones insisted. "Why can’t you buy a mansion when you live in a different kind of house?"
For a person reluctant to admit mistakes, it would have been easy to acknowledge Henry’s impact. But in Jones' world, the Cowboys apparently had no way to afford Henry, despite ample evidence to the contrary.
3. Zeke the Prince
Many wonder why Ezekiel Elliott, a past-his-prime running back, is still with the Cowboys. In early November, Elliott was reportedly disciplined for missing meetings and left behind when the team traveled to play the Falcons. Jones, however, wouldn’t have any Zeke criticism.
"Well, Zeke couldn’t make the trip," Jones explained. "He was being punished and so he just couldn’t make the trip. He’s a much better option because he’s back in Dallas."
He wasn’t done: "You’ve got to love somebody that plays the game as physical as he plays it. He’s inspirational and always has been."
2. That Escalated Quickly
In a recent radio interview, Jones ranted about criticisms of his offseason personnel decisions.
"That's not your job. I'll get somebody else to ask these questions. I'm not kidding. You really think you're gonna sit here with a microphone and tell me all of the things that I've done wrong?" he fired off.
Jones then doubled down on a separate, infamous question about installing curtains in AT&T Stadium to prevent sun glare:
"Well let’s tear the damn stadium down and build another one. Are you kidding me? Everybody has the same thing. Every team that comes in here has the same issues."
1. The White Hot Intensity of a Thousand Suns
During a recent game, Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb dropped an easy touchdown pass while facing blinding sunlight from AT&T Stadium’s west windows. When asked if he’d support adding curtains, Lamb replied emphatically, "Yes. One thousand percent."
Jones had other thoughts, though. After reporters failed to ask about the sun, Jones took it upon himself:
"By the way, we know where the sun is going to be when we flip the coin," he said. "Let's just tear the damn stadium down and build another one. Are you kidding me?"
And then, in true Jerry Jones fashion, he added, "Every team that comes in here has the same issues. They know where the sun is going to be. Every team has the same thing. We get to know that almost a year in advance."
For anyone following the Cowboys, it’s clear Jerry Jones’ comments aren’t simply outlandish—they’re par for the course. As the 2024 season progresses, fans are left wondering if his antics will continue or if this is just the beginning of another unforgettable year in “Jerry World.”
